How to stick to your home workout routine
Without going into too much detail, we all know by now just how serious the current situation is. Needless to say, after the lockdown is over we might have to practice social distancing and even some self-quarantine time for the remainder of the year. Yes, it sucks. Also, we are all in this together. We might as well try and put on our big girl panties and make the most of this. So, one thing we do have control over during this time is our fitness. Gyms are breeding grounds for germs and viruses, so best we keep sweating it out at our homes. We’ve always preferred home workouts, we do it for a living after all, but now we really want to reach more people, guiding them to their strongest, fittest self yet-at home! Yes, we all have limited equipment at home, but you really don’t need a bunch of fancy equipment to get a good sweat going.
Here are a few tips to keep you motivated and on-track with your home workouts:
- Make an appointment with yourself:
Make sure that you set aside a specific time to get your workout in. Think of your workout time as a really important business meeting, your health is after all top priority. Work life balance has been thrown into such sharp focus with the global pandemic, make sure you are fair towards yourself ad reward your body and mind with a workout. Even when your motivation is super low, think about how amazing you feel after working out-do it for those endorphins!
- Set up a specific workout space:
If possible, have an area of your house/yard that you dedicate to your workouts, almost like your own mini gym area. Set it up with a towel and any equipment that you have. If you just don’t have the space, no worries. Keep all your gym equipment in one space so you can easily access them every time you ready to workout.
- Have a clear plan:
There is no use in starting your workout without a specific plan/program already set out. If you have a black board or something similar, write your program down and follow it. We’ve found that if you just start working out, a lot of time gets wasted and the structure is just not there-yes even us personal trainers need some structure. If you are able to, purchase a program designed specifically for your needs! This way, you are sure that you are training efficiently and being pushed properly but also getting enough rest. If you know that you have zero self-discipline and you cancel on yourself all the time, book a live online session via Skype or Zoom with one of our trainers! We have found these sessions to be so much fun, we really love that we are still able to interact with our regular clients thanks to technology!
- Remove any distractions:
It can be so easy to get distracted at home, especially if you have kids. Turn off the television, put your phone on silent or better even, do not disturb mode. Put your favourite workout music on, nice and loud, and get that “gym atmosphere” going. For kids, try and involve them in the workout if needed.
- Get an accountability partner:
If you find it hard to self-motivate, get someone that can keep you accountable, or even better a workout buddy. Whether it is your partner, a family member, your roommate, this person can motivate you to get going on days you feel least like working out. You can even use FaceTime, Skype or Zoom to work out together. If you don’t want to sign up for one-on-one sessions with a trainer, you can also join our Zoom group classes and even “meet” new people in class!
